Deku Trees

I drew the great deku tree for some reason. I was trying to develop my use of black and white. I don't think it worked all that well so I added colour. That also didn't work so well! Really need to practice these things more. Might redo the colour one if I get the chance.

They were both done with no planning or references. Possibly this is the reason they don't work huh?

Doodle Time!

Today I am posting doodle filled sketchbook pages! Isn't that nice! Not that interesting visually but fun all the same I think?

Ex Libris

I designed this ex libris mostly to try out various digital techniques and colour separation things. It is tacky but I quite like it. Also shoes!

Museum of Childhood

On a similar note to yesterday, I have some sketches made on a trip! This time it was to the V&A Museum of Childhood. It was good once I got there, which took a while because I somehow managed to get myself lost. Oh well. In the end I made two basic conclusions. 1. Any museum that features both a boxed Buzz Lightyear and a Sega Megadrive has got my vote. 2. Toys that are older than that have a tendency to be outrageously creepy.

Yeah, so, two thumbs up from me.

George Condo

Today I have a selection of sketches that I made on a visit to the Mental States exhibition at the Hayward Gallery. George Condo's work is all pretty crazy and also good. You should all check it out. Except it's actually finished now so just look at stuff online or something I guess?

Jus' Sketchbook Sketches

A couple drawings from my sketchbook. Trying to keep the updates coming daily. So far so good! Let's see how long I can keep it up!

The Colour Out Of Space

I got round to scanning my big comic! Good news huh? I would have posted the previous version but that was even bigger!

Yeah so, it's a comic strip based on HP Lovecraft's 'The Colour Out Of Space'. I took some liberties with the story but tried to keep it essentially the same story. Hopefully it works regardless of whether you've read the original.

I'm pretty happy with how this turned out. It is one of the most ambitious comics I've done, largely down to the size. The structure is essentially just a whole bunch of short (5 panels or so) strips all squashed onto one page. The hard part was arranging them so that the order was clear but without the pace becoming monotonous. I think I managed okay?

Sketchbook

This is what it looks like when I am writing comics apparently.

Such gibberish.

Anyhow, this became my Lovecraft strip. I actually quite like the final comic but not sure how I can get it up here. I only have an A4 scanner but the comic is A1. Such a dilemma. Maybe I will have to skip it for now. Sorry everybody!

Lovecraft Books

These are pages taken from some booklets I made illustrating 'The Colour Out Of Space'. I was experimenting with format and with different perspectives of the story.

This first is from a book with a fixed viewpoint of the farm. The idea was to illustrate the story with a sort of detachment. Not focusing on characters but on the environment. In the end it didn't work and I stopped half way through. Still, this page is kind of nice?

This second is from a tall book. It was a funny format to work with but in the end it came out quite nice. It was all drawn in green ink, using a more varied approach to subject and composition than the other two.

This third book was drawn quickly and very small (It was about 4cm tall I think). I drew it after reading some Peanuts, clearly. I thought it would be interesting to illustrate the story from the perspective of the youngest child because his view would be in such contrast to the semi-scientific outlook of the narrator. This book was probably most important for the development of my final illustration (coming soon to a blog near you! (If I can ever will myself to scan it)).

Back In The Day

Oh yes so I finally have my computer connected to the internet. It is surely a wonderful thing. Sorry for that massive gap of nothingness. Hopefully I will update regularly from now on. I guess it is time to upload bits of work that I have accumulated over these few months.

These are some studies made from life in preparation for a project on HP Lovecraft's 'The Colour Out Of Space'. Pretty Standard.
